Iron Shirt Qi Gong is the martial aspect of the Universal Tao system. Originally used to protect the internal organs during martial arts combat, it is used in this system to ground to the earth, develop good structure and strengthen the internal organs.
The practice is divided into three parts: Iron Shirt I, II, and III and during the beginner stages once practices Iron Shirt I. These consist of the following postures:
Embracing the Tree
Golden Urn
Golden Turtle
Water Buffalo
Iron Bridge
Phoenix washes its golden feathers
Iron Shirt develops internal power and structure and a well-conditioned body through simple techniques that build and store Qi (Life Force energy). The core of Iron Shirt I consists of the Qi packing and breathing processes plus the Iron Shirt postures.
By using certain standing postures, muscle locks and breathing techniques, one learns how to draw and circulate Qi from the earth, nature and the universe, where it is then stored in the vital organs, connective tissues, spine and bones. This strengthens and rejuvenates them, as well as toning the tendons, muscles and replenishing bone marrow.
The body becomes open and relaxed. Joints are strengthened, muscles, tendons and ligaments become soft and strong, and the bones and bone marrow become strong and healthy. As the internal structure is strengthened through layers of Qi energy, problems of poor posture and circulation of energy are corrected.

Just as a tree needs good roots in order to be stable, so do we. Iron Shirt Qi Gong helps us to become rooted to the earth, thereby keeping our body centered and balanced. This physical and psychological rooting to the Earth is a vital factor in the more advanced stages of Taoist practice.
